IRCTC waiting lists and chances of ticket confirmation

Indian Railway Online Ticket booking is under the website IRCTC. The only thing that we feel awkward about this site is the large number of types of waiting lists in the site. If you are booking ticket advancely and if all the seats are over they will allot you RAC which is reservation against cancellation. But after a limit of nearly 90 seats they will start alloting tickts as waiting lists.
So while booking there are the following kinds of tickets
1. Confirmed tickets
These tickets are confirmed against a particular seat number. Under any case you will get the seat specified in the ticket that is generated after the booking procedure.
2. RAC (Reservation against cancellation)
These tickets are given after filling all the general seats available at the time of booking. These tickets will get confirmed if anyone cancels his confirmed ticket. Normally nearly 90 seats are allotted as RAC tickets. If you are getting into the train with an RAC ticket which is not upgraded as a confirmed ticket, you will need to share a single berth with another person. Usually Ticket examiners will check such seats and allot them to vacant seats available due to the absense of confirmed travellers. But if no such seat is available you have to travel by sharing the seat with another traveller.
3. Waiting list Tickets
These tickets are alloted after exhausting RAC tickets also. By using a waiting list ticket booked through online, you cannot travel in the train. But if the waiting list ticket is directly booked from some railway station ticket counter you can travel but no particular seat will be given to you if no vacant seat is available after filling RAC ticket to confirm. But in case of online waiting list tickets you cannot travel if it does not advance to at least RAC. The money you paid will be credited back to your online banking account through internet banking but some money will be reduced as service charge.
Also there is a confusing display in the website while you are attempting to book a waiting list ticket. Suppose you see WL 24/WL15, what does it mean. It simply indiates that you are going to get ticket to the 24 th waiting list position, but there is already 9 cancellations and your current waiting list position is 15th. When more people cancel their confirmed tickets, your first number will remain the same ie WL 24, but the next one will decrease and when that comes to RAC you can travel in the train
Types of waiting lists
The main types of waiting lists in IRCTC are
WL- It is the common waiting list. This is for tickets booked in waiting against general quota
LDWL- This is the waiting list ticket against ladies seat reservation.
CKWL- This is the waiting list for tatkal tickets. This waiting list will advance to confirmed tickets only if some persons who booked tatkal ticket cancels. So the chance of getting ticket confirmed is very less if your waiting list position is greater than 10
PQWL- This is waiting list ticket against pooled quota. The chance for getting this ticket confirmed is very less. It will be confirmed only after confirming other waiting list tickets which usually does not happen in most of the cases

Booking in the official site of indian railway is not open so far. It is still under developing stage. This news was released from Indian railway about two months ago. So you can expect ticket booking in Official site of Indian railway soon

If this status is before preparing chart, there is a chance. In every train there is an emergency quota of some predefined number of seats. If no special quota travallers like politicians come at the last day of traval, while preparing chart there is a good chance to get your seat confirmed.

Yes for PNR status you can go to these sites. You only need to just type in the pnr number and click get status.
But you can also know the PNR status from your mobile, by sending a message containing only PNR number to +919773300000. You will get your PNR status as replay sms. This is a new facility available from Google. Also this number will give the meaning of words if you send define+space+word to the Google number above

you can try any of the methods above. the links given above will give your ticket status ,if you have internet connection use it. If you do not have internet access, try sending pnr number to google number given in previous comments
Now advance booking has been increased from 90 days to 120 days from the date of travel. This will make more people to block unnecessarily and increase black market ticket. Thanks for SHARING:)

If your waiting list is from railway station, you can travel, as you have already paid and there is no way to get the amount you paid.
But if it is waiting list when booked through internet, you cannot travel. You will get the amount refunded in your account.

My waiting list is 60 and it is sheshadri express from bangalore to vijayawada and the journey date is 7th march

actually this train is not familiar to me. ask your friends who is travelling in that train about how long waiting list will get confirmed.
Also there is no additional way to get your ticket confirmed. It purely depends on the number of passengers canceling ticket

Thanks a lot my friends. Nearly 3 or 4 hours before the starting of train, chart will be prepared. At that time you can know whether your ticket is in waiting list or RAC or confirmed. If your waiting list is 1 before chart preparation, your chance of getting it confirmed is very high. Actually before chart preparation emergency quota will be given to waiting list users, if no eligible quota users is not there. But you cannot relay on this in occasions like republic day and independent day etc. In these days this quota will be filled by politicians who are eligible for this quota

Friends, tatkal ticket getting confirmed depends on the train route and demand for the train. But in the two or three last days usually up to 15 waiting list get confirmed. For remaining confirmation chances, you can ask somebody who is familiar with the train route.
I booked a tatKal ticket today morning for Swaraj express from Mumbai Bandrah to Jammu Tawi for a trip commencing tomorrow morning at 7.55Am. At the time of cooking the status was wl ck 23 and now after 9 hours it has come down to 19. What are the chances of this ticket getting confirmed and if it doesn't get confirmed, can I still travel by the train? I've booked the ticket in Mumbai CST terminous. Plz help me in this regard.

@Sayad. the train is not familiar to me. so I am not sure whether your ticket will be confirmed or not. But if you have taken the tatkal ticket through internet, you are not allowed to travel, charge will be refunded to your account. But if you have booked it from railway station you can travel.
@tarak : Once the chart is prepared usually there will not be any change. But still RAC can get confirmed single seat, if some traveler is not coming.
@yunus :Surely if your ticket is not confirmed, you will get your money refunded automatically. It is worth waiting as usually waiting list of 5 will get confirmed.

Sorry to disappoint my friend. I am not familiar with that train. If it is in my familiar routes, waiting list 30 will not confirm within 14 days up to 80%

@Robin : You cannot travel if the waiting list ticket is booked through internet. But if the ticket is booked from some railway reservation counter, you can travel, but seats will not be available.
@Rajesh : If it is tatkal there is no RAC, from tatkal waiting list, it will be directly getting confirmed. Normal waiting list confirmation rate will decrease, once tatkal booking has started

@Pradeep : What we can do my friend. It is a railway rule. It may be because, for online users it is easy to refund money. Also there are some additional problems if it is allowed. If extra waiting list 300 people is also coming to sleeper, it will be like General only

@Srikanth Naidu - After chart is prepared, if you are in WL you cannot travel if your ticket is booked from internet.
@okdole - If you were in sleeper class, you would have better chance. But as you are in AC, your chance is less only.

@Arun - Most probably you will get it confirmed. In most of the routes I have seen, such a status will surely get confirmed.
@Joshy Kurian Paul - If not confirmed by the date of journey. You cannot travel, if your ticket is booked through internet. But you can travel by sharing seat with your friend, if your tatkal ticket is taken from railway station.

@Harish- sorry dude. I think your chances are less. As even if extra coach is inserted, it will be for sleeper. Also WL88 is very long to clear to confirmed.
@Arun- Sure my friend. RAC means you can sit, but you will have one more person along with you in the same seat. As it is a sleeper seat there will be more than enough space for two persons to sit and travel. If both are ready to adjust, both can sleep in one seat itself also.

You have good chance of getting the ticket confirmed, at least while chart is preparing, you will get it confirmed. But for a surety you can try for tatkal also.

@Aryl - If it is AC coach, your chances are in the boundary. you can think about taking one more ticket if possible.
